When did hemp become legal in NZ?

1st of August 2006

On the 1st of August 2006, a new regulatory regime for the cultivation, processing and distribution of industrial hemp as an agricultural crop was put in place. As described above, on 12 November 2018 the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) announced hemp seeds to be allowed to be sold as food for human consumption.

Is Hemp comfortable to wear?

Hemp fabric is:

  • Absorbent
  • Breathable
  • Natural
  • Soft and will get softer with every wash/wear

Will my Hemp shirt protect me from the sun?

Yes. Hemp fabric naturally provides UV protection (stopping up to 95% of the sun's harmful UV rays).

Is Hemp fabric easy to look after and does it crease?

Yes hemp is fairly easy to care for, follow instructions on care label for best results.

  • We recommend cold gentle machine wash, do not use warm or hot wash as this may cause shrinkage
  • Line dry inside out, not in direct sunlight
  • Do not dryclean, soak or scrub.
  • Hemp also responds well to heat, a med-low temperature tumble dry occasionally and/or a warm iron while still slightly damp for best results

Hemp also responds well to body heat therefore creases will dissipate the longer you wear the garment.

Is Hemp similar to linen?

Yes but stronger and more durable.

What other properties does hemp fabric have?

Hemp fibre contains strong anti-fungal, antibacterial properties, (making it ideal for use in medical environments) and is highly resistant to mould, mildew, and potentially harmful microbes.

Is Hemp UV protective?

Hemp fibres are Naturally UV resistant to about 70% and then once its made into fabric and processed its UV resistant to about 40-50%.
